The morning, before anyone awakes
while the night hasn’t yet lifted her skirts
and the chirp, chirp, chirp of crickets
serenade the stillness
and the sparrows dream of a moon
that exists before the sun is birthed
and the air is delicate and dewy,
sweet with the lemon-mint of gums.
The morning, before anyone awakes
and the day unfolds desolate
as an unkempt gravel road,
demanding as a freeway…
